How Solar Works

  • Light from the sun contains many tiny bits of energy called photons.

  • Some of these photons hit solar modules, which consist of many connected solar cells.

  • Photons hitting the top layer of a solar cell cause electrons to flow through the bottom layer.

  • This movement of electrons generates direct current (DC) electricity that flows to an inverter.

  • Inverters convert DC electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity.

  • AC electricity is used to power the building, reducing its electricity bills and carbon emissions.

  • This solar electricity can also charge an energy storage system or flow back into the grid to other buildings.

SOUTH

The primary benefit of a south-facing solar panel array is that more power can be generated by each panel. South-facing solar panel installations achieve impressive peak performance, although this is only for a limited time.

EAST

A solar panel installation facing east will achieve peak output during the early morning as the sun rises. System output will reduce slowly as noon approaches before trailing off in the afternoon.

WEST

There is little difference between the output performance of east and west-facing solar panels. Unlike east-facing installations, panels facing west will achieve peak output at mid-afternoon. Performance then trails off as the evening approaches.

EAST-WEST

For many owners, the performance of an east-west system most closely matches on-site energy needs. Combining both east and west-facing panels, you can achieve steady output throughout the morning and afternoon.

How an Inverter Works

A vital part of the Solar PV system is the Inverter. A solar inverter works by taking in the variable direct current, or ‘DC’ output, from your solar panels and transforming it into alternating 120V/240V current, or ‘AC’ output.
